Embroidery Workshop

We are running six one-day workshops starting on the 5th September in Leamington Spa with noted embroiderer Nicola Jarvis. The workshops focus on the historic techniques of Canvas Work, Crewel Work, Silk Work, Metal Thread Work, Raised Work and Whitework. The workshops are as follows (N.B. the first workshop has already been run): • The Exotic and Fantastic – Jacobean-style Crewel Work – 14 November 2015 A mini sampler will be worked with core stitch techniques: stem stitch, fancy fillings, block satin stitch, encroaching satin stitch, coral stitch and French knots. • For Pleasure and Ornament – Luxurious Silk Work 12 December 2015 A mini sampler featuring antique motifs will be worked in stitches typical of silk work from these periods: satin stitch and long and short stitch. • All that Glisters – Metal Thread Work - 23 January 2016 Students will be guided through a selection of metal thread techniques featured on C17th and C18th regalia. • The Fascinating World of Raised Work - 20 February 2016 Students will study examples of raised work ¬stitches and techniques on C16th and C17th garments, caskets and mirror frames. • A Whiter Shade of Pale – White Work Embroidery 19 March 2016 Students will be introduced to a range of antique white embroideries, featuring Christening gowns, petticoats and domestic linens. The workshops will be run at Nicola’s studio in Leamington Spa from 10.00am to 4.30pm Each session will cost £165 (£135 to Guild Members) and will include the kit supplied by Nicola for students to complete the workshop.
